“What are you tolerating in your life?”
When my coach asked me that question, I did not think of myself as someone who tolerated much of anything— but I was. At that time, I was navigating many changes all at once. I had just survived a painful divorce. I was adjusting to my new life as a single working mom of two young children.
At work, I was feeling the relentless pressure of billable hours and business development expectations. I was struggling to find my voice as a new partner at the firm. While wrestling with working mom guilt, I was considering running for President of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, which was the one thing that lit me up every single time I thought about it.
But I could not see a clear path forward. I was letting my fear of change and limiting beliefs hold me back. I was getting in my own way.
Then I hired my coach (despite my fear about not having enough money to do so). My coach helped me to see things through a different lens, to approach situations with curiosity, to cultivate a broader perspective, and to identify what was holding me back.
With my coach in my corner, I decided to live a vibrant life with purpose and meaning. I was not alone as I tackled each of these transitions. I had someone who supported me, challenged me, and held me accountable.
From Coached to Coach
I followed my passion and served as President of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association during the pandemic. To keep our members connected, I founded a live virtual leadership café called “On What Grounds?” At each café, I led intimate discussions and shared personal stories with groups of women attorneys and judges about hard topics, including imposter syndrome, mental health, career transition, professional confidence, goal setting, resilience, and value-centered leadership.
I learned that women attorneys at all career levels are open and eager to share deeply about the issues they face. We are all hungry for resources, clarity, and support.
Through these experiences and my own coach’s support, it became clear that my path forward was to become a certified professional coach. I started my coaching practice because I saw a place where my personal passion to see women succeed and a deep need intersected.
What makes me qualified to do this?
In addition to my professional coaching certification, I feel uniquely qualified to coach my clients through their life changes because I have lived through many major transitions myself:
I have been a single, divorced parent.
I am a mom of two young children.
I am a practicing estate planning attorney who counsels clients during some of life’s most difficult situations.
I am a partner and owner of a successful all-female estate planning law firm.
I have been a litigator who switched practice areas mid-career.
I have stepped into leadership roles.
